Gynecomastia Recovery Timeline: When You Can Return to Work & Exercise
Dr Hassan Nurein
Gynaecomastia surgery can be life-changing, but many men ask, ‘When can I return to normal life?’
In this guide, Dr Nurein outlines a realistic recovery timeline following gynaecomastia surgery, helping you plan your return to work, exercise, and daily activities, without compromising your results.
Week 1: Prioritise Healing
Returning to work: Most patients are able to resume work within 5–7 days post-operatively (those in sedentary or desk-based roles may return even sooner).
Exercise after surgery: No chest exercises or heavy lifting during this period, rest is essential.
Self-care advice: Sleep in an elevated position, wear your compression vest continuously (day and night), and monitor swelling and drainage as directed by Dr Nurein.
Weeks 2–3: Gradual Return to Activity
Light cardiovascular activity (e.g. walking): Safe to resume at a low intensity.
Work routines: By now, the majority of patients are comfortably back at work.
Scar care and hygiene: Dr Nurein advises taking gentle showers and ensuring the surgical area remains clean and dry.
Weeks 4–6: Reintroducing Exercise
Resistance training: You may begin light workouts focusing on non-chest muscle groups.
Chest-specific training: May be resumed with caution and only with clinical approval.
Watch for signs of concern: Be alert to any increased pain, swelling, or noticeable asymmetry.
Beyond 6 Weeks: Resuming Full Activity
Gym and fitness: Full access to the gym is usually restored at this stage, including chest and strength training.
Preserving your results: Continue wearing the compression vest at night, ensure sufficient rest, remain well-hydrated, and maintain a diet rich in protein to support healing.
